Boisdale & Balvenie Game Restaurant Shooting Cup 2015
Shooting Cup 2015
August 4 2015
August 4th saw the greats of the UK restaurant world gather to compete in the Balvenie Game Restaurant Shooting Cup, hosted by Boisdale Restaurant and Boisdale Media at the West London Shooting School. The first of its kind in the UK and with over eight Michelin Stars between, the competition set the finest game chefs and restaurateurs against each other to shoot clays and targets. Mark Edwards of Nobu was crowned champion in the inaugural competition who was presented with his trophy – a unique handmade Quaich presented by Kirsten Grant-Meikle of William Grant.
To celebrate the consumption of British Game across the country and its growth over the last decade, Boisdale Restaurant, who have been serving Game since 1989, brought together the best in the business to go head to head for the ultimate title. Old school titans Wiltons and Rules fought it out with game specialist Richard Corrigan and Chris Galvin, and some of the country’s recent talents including James Lowe at Lyle’s and Oliver Gladwin at Rabbit.
They all had their ‘game’ faces on to battle it out for the top spot against each other and food critic Bill Knott. The five teams, who were led by Boisdale owner Ranald Macdonald, competed in a “3 Feathers” simulated drive with a range of clays of Grouse, Pigeon, High Pheasant and culminating in a magnificent 15 gun flurry all shot by a range of some of the finest Purdey guns. Chefs Mike Robinson of Harwood Arms and Anthony Demtere of Wild Honey came head to head for the top spot of the competition, only to be beaten by Mark Edwards.
There were no sore losers though as Mike was presented with a beautiful tweed coat by James Purdey for the Silver prize. As well as the winners of the day there was also time to have a bit of fun with Andre Garrett of Clivenden House being awarded the ‘Most Appalling Shot’ award for the day’s events, being gifted a bottle of Belvenie 25 year old single barrel. There was also the ‘Buffalo Challenge’ hosted by Leica Sport Optics who offered everyone a chance to shoot a variety of sporting rifles at game based targets. The winner, Richard Corrigan, took home a pair of Leica Trinovid 8×42 Binoculars at lunch.
