August 4th saw the greats of the UK restau­rant world gath­er to com­pete in the Bal­ve­nie Game Restau­rant Shoot­ing Cup, host­ed by Bois­dale Restau­rant and Bois­dale Media at the West Lon­don Shoot­ing School. The first of its kind in the UK and with over eight Miche­lin Stars between, the com­pe­ti­tion set the finest game chefs and restau­ra­teurs against each oth­er to shoot clays and tar­gets. Mark Edwards of Nobu was crowned cham­pi­on in the inau­gur­al com­pe­ti­tion who was pre­sent­ed with his tro­phy – a unique hand­made Quaich pre­sent­ed by Kirsten Grant-Meik­le of William Grant.

To cel­e­brate the con­sump­tion of British Game across the coun­try and its growth over the last decade, Bois­dale Restau­rant, who have been serv­ing Game since 1989, brought togeth­er the best in the busi­ness to go head to head for the ulti­mate title. Old school titans Wiltons and Rules fought it out with game spe­cial­ist Richard Cor­ri­g­an and Chris Galvin, and some of the country’s recent tal­ents includ­ing James Lowe at Lyle’s and Oliv­er Glad­win at Rab­bit.

They all had their ​‘game’ faces on to bat­tle it out for the top spot against each oth­er and food crit­ic Bill Knott. The five teams, who were led by Bois­dale own­er Ranald Mac­don­ald, com­pet­ed in a ​“3 Feath­ers” sim­u­lat­ed dri­ve with a range of clays of Grouse, Pigeon, High Pheas­ant and cul­mi­nat­ing in a mag­nif­i­cent 15 gun flur­ry all shot by a range of some of the finest Purdey guns. Chefs Mike Robin­son of Har­wood Arms and Antho­ny Demtere of Wild Hon­ey came head to head for the top spot of the com­pe­ti­tion, only to be beat­en by Mark Edwards.

There were no sore losers though as Mike was pre­sent­ed with a beau­ti­ful tweed coat by James Purdey for the Sil­ver prize. As well as the win­ners of the day there was also time to have a bit of fun with Andre Gar­rett of Cliven­den House being award­ed the ​‘Most Appalling Shot’ award for the day’s events, being gift­ed a bot­tle of Bel­ve­nie 25 year old sin­gle bar­rel. There was also the ​‘Buf­fa­lo Chal­lenge’ host­ed by Leica Sport Optics who offered every­one a chance to shoot a vari­ety of sport­ing rifles at game based tar­gets. The win­ner, Richard Cor­ri­g­an, took home a pair of Leica Tri­novid 8×42 Binoc­u­lars at lunch.
